Äußerst nüchtern fängt die Kamera von David Kruta das Vorstadtleben in Montclair in New Jersey ein. Gleich die erste Szene zeigt Abby zusammen mit ihrem aus anderen Hausfrauen bestehenden Freundeskreis bei ihren täglichen Übungen im Fitnessstudio. Das Dramatischste, was diese Damen zu besprechen haben, ist die Erkenntnis, dass man sich in ihrem Alter angeblich entscheiden muss, ob man entweder ein straffes Gesicht oder lieber einen festen Hintern haben mag. Abbys Bekenntnis lautet „I am going for ass!“, womit sich bereits andeutet, dass sie in diesen Kreisen das Potential zu einer kleinen Revolutionärin hat. Hier deutet sich bereits der dramatische Konflikt an, der den gesamten weiteren Handlungsverlauf bestimmen wird. Es geht um spießige Konformität versus individuelle Selbstverwirklichung. Die einzige Besonderheit in diesem recht banalen Schema besteht darin, dass lesbische verheiratete Frauen in diesem Film bereits zur Normalität dazugehören. So bietet Concussion die zumindest für Spießbürger eventuell neue Erkenntnis, dass auch homosexuelle Paare durchaus spießig sein können. An dieser Stelle zeigt sich eine generelle leichte Unstimmigkeit, die Concussion durchzieht. Einerseits gefällt der Film durch eine wunderbare Leichtigkeit und eine feine Ironie. Beide Eigenschaften finden immer wieder in Abbys leicht spöttischem Lächeln zusammen. Andererseits wirkt Concussion aber auch ein wenig so, als ob der Film selbst aus der Perspektive von Abbys spießigem Umfeld auf das – ach so gewagte – Treiben seiner – ach so individuellen – Protagonistin blickt, das sich bei genauer Betrachtung als recht harmloser – aber ach so lesbischer — Kuschelsex erweist. Dabei gelingt es insbesondere Robin Weigert mit kleinen Gesten und feinen Regungen in ihrer Mimik Abby als subtil komplexe Persönlichkeit zum Leben zu erwecken. Passon might borrow some of Akerman’s framings, watching Abby through long or medium shots as she makes her own preparations for her home life and sex work, but Passon brings us closer to Abby’s physical and emotional feelings, as she experiments with the boundaries of where she’ll take her own passions.
